Shooting in manual mode: Father’s Day weekend at the beach

Our favorite place to go on the weekend is the beach. Even better is when we make a spontaneous trip and go fully clothed and just enjoy the beautiful view.

We took a trip to Indian Rocks Beach about an hour before sunset, and it was perfect. We like this beach because it’s not as crowded as the others nearby, and the water is super clean and clear.

I’ve also been teaching myself how to shoot in manual. Whew! It’s been quite the learning curve, but I love how the photos are turning out! Shooting in manual has given me more control over the brightness, depth and sharpness. So being the Momtog I am, I was shooting photos of my crew the entire time we were at the beach! The natural light was perfect and I was able to capture some moments during golden hour.

So, the time of day was around 7:30pm, and here are my camera settings:

  1. Shutter speed: 1/400
  2. Aperture: f/2.8
  3. ISO: 100

I have been shooting with these settings during this time of day for more consistency with my photos. Do you shoot in manual? Share some of your techniques in the comments. I’d love to chat!
